Chinese Folk Couplets ; Anon; Numbers 11-A and 11-B; Series 1982; unframed (mounted on museum quality ragboard; foamcore backing; sleeved); 10" x 30" each; English Translations: (for 11-A) Dragons and phoenixes bring good luck; (for 11-B) Happiness comes in pairs; GV writes, “I collected this unpublished couplet from an anonymous Chinese folk artist on the streets of Rugao, Jiangsu Province, during Spring Festival 1982. It is one of a set of twelve in my collection in pre1949 revolution style. Painted on red paper and mounted on museum-quality ragboard, the couplet displays traditional Chinese poetic features. Mounted on the back is my brief contextual, historical, and interpretive text that includes Daisy Rothgery translations in Pinyin and English. Signed.
